I remember the first time I saw Rampage Jackson fight. Well, I don’t really remember the fight, I just remember being insanely jealous that my name wasn’t Rampage. I was so jealous, in fact, that I apparently continued to talk about it so much that now my friend and favorite human in the entire world, Nick, calls me Rampage, or Ramps for short.
Anyway, UFC fighters are pretty fit, right? Like you can’t be a lazy fat ass and beat the hell out of someone for a living. The president of UFC, Dana White, estimates that about 84% of these muscle-bound modern day gladiators smoke weed. There are a lot of issues these days regarding the drug testing policy of these fighters, and White says that if they began doing so the suspensions for weed would be staggering. Obviously well over three quarters of the fighters would be unavailable to fight, pretty much putting an end to their organization. He is also quoted as saying, “But the guys that are gonna get busted, they’re gonna get the same suspension as they would for a PED. Whereas, when you’re taking a performance-enhancing drug, you go in and you face another fighter, you can hurt him. But for marijuana? It’s just crazy.”
The UFC does not punish their fighters for marijuana use leading up to the days before the fight, and I think that’s quite progressive of them. The only way the fighters get in trouble is if they smoke the day of the fight. That’s still not good enough for some of the fighters, however, and Matt Riddle had this to say: “I really don’t have a reaction to it because, to be honest, Dana White…it’s sad but he’s uneducated to the sport and the industry. He’s calling me a moron for using my medicine when half his fighters are on steroids. It’s pretty offensive…Even now, I don’t have a dislike for Dana White or the UFC. But really, he’s just a juice monkey who’s bald, who doesn’t know shit about business. He just yells the F word and expects things to be handed to him.”
Personally, I think Matt Riddle should consider any leniency towards marijuana a win, because comparatively the UFC is pretty lax compared to other sports organizations like the NFL, NBA, and MLB, where penalties and suspensions are pretty strict.
