We have heard almost every name under the sun when it comes to marijuana: Super Lemon Haze, Chemdawg, Headband, Cheese, UK Cheese, Blue Dream, Glazed Cherries, Gorilla Glue #4, Lemon Jack, Super Silver Haze, LA Confidential and Tangie, just to name a few. When it comes to naming marijuana strains the list could go on for days, breeders and growers alike are able to name their specific flower anything they want at the moment(even if it’s not truly what they say it is).
Soon the days of creating gimmicky names for specific strains might be in the past. Cannabis Business Times recently reported that on August, 4 2015 a marijuana cultivator had filed a patent on their own specific strain. U.S. patent number 9095554 was granted for a strain of cannabis that has a unique genetic makeup and produces significantly high amounts of THC.
What does that mean for all you marijuana smokers? It means that if your favorite medical marijuana dispensary gets in a new batch of Girl Scout Cookies that you liked 6 months ago, this batch will be very similar to the last one. Now this also brings about controversy in how the chain of custody will be maintained and what legal actions will be taken if people don’t adhere to the patent laws. Nonetheless, this is really good for the marijuana industry as a whole as we inch closer to legitimacy.
We think it is pretty cool that the industry is starting to build these infrastructures of standards and we are also stoked that our favorite strains will always be there for us in the future. We are making pretty big strides as a community and we are glad to be a part of keeping that momentum going in the right direction. Now all we need is smell-a-vision to come to fruition so we can shop from the comfort of our couches.
