UFC Fighter Nick Diaz Gets Five Year Suspension For Marijuana

Cannabis News:

Remember that time UFC President Dana White said that, according to his estimates, 84% of UFC fighters smoke weed?  It seems that, comparatively, the UFC is pretty lax when it comes to marijuana related offences.  The Nevada State Athletic Commission, however, is not.

Yesterday, the NSAC decided unanimously to ban UFC welterweight Nick Diaz for five years because of the third marijuana offense of his career.  The NSAC discussed a lifetime ban for Diaz, and commissioner Skip Avansino even acknowledged that a five year ban is essentially a lifetime ban for Diaz, who is 32.

Statements By Diaz

Diaz did appear on his own behalf in front of the commission, but declined to answer any of their approximately 30 questions.  After the meeting, Diaz said, “I’m pretty pissed.  I got into this sport for this exact reason, being stuck in a room with people like that.  I wanted to tell them what I think.  I wanted to tell each and every one of them they’re a bunch of dorks.  Everybody who seems them or knows who they are should tell them that.  I would if it weren’t for my experts advising me to keep my mouth shut.  I wanted to get up and say, ‘Look.  You guys are way the fuck out of line.’”

Diaz tested positive for the third time after his loss to Anderson Silva on January 31st, but is in a very unique situation as he passed two tests the night of the fight, and only failed the third.  The failed test was also collected and analyzed differently than the first two, and a completely different lab handled it, which, according to Diaz’s attorney, made the results “scientifically unreliable”.

Also, the third sample was identified by Diaz’s name (which is not regulation practice), and may have been collected unsupervised.

Furthermore, Diaz is an admitted medical marijuana patient in the state of California.
