With 2014 now in our rearview mirror, Stoned Girls would like to take a look back into the undisputed best year weed has had yet. Cannabis culture is now more mainstream than it has ever been, all thanks to the legal and social wins pot has had over the last 12 months. Here are the top 10 marijuana moments of 2014:
10. Tommy Chong appeared on Dancing with the Stars
Not only did ABC choose the classic stoner icon Tommy Chong to appear as a contestant on DWTS this year, but they actually allowed him to pay homage to his stoner history in many of his performances. From his green suits, to subtle pretend joint tokes, to his low rider, Tommy Chong brought “pot culture” into the living rooms all across America.
9. Grandmas smoked weed for the first time
Everybody I know (including my own grandmother) has seen the viral video of three grandmothers smoking weed for the first time, and they are ADORABLE. There was way more to this humorous and amazing video though. They recognized the medicinal benefits of weed and admitted they would try it again, given the chance. Not to mention, seeing three elderly women stoned and laughing about Broadway pussy farts made marijuana look as non-threatening as possible.
8. Celebrity Weed Strains
The announcement that Bob Marley would launch his own strain of weed from beyond the grave had the cannabis community excited to say the least. Marley Natural, the new company, boasts that the strains they will offer closely resemble what Marley himself smoked.
7. Waka Flocka sold cough drops
During the American Music Awards this year, an ad for cough drops aired during a commercial break. Sounds innocent enough, right? Nope. For those who don’t remember, the ad for Pine Brothers cough drops featured a very smoky Waka Flocka Flame. Pine Brothers was not subtle with their weed innuendos, and the best part is it aired on national television. Once again, marijuana was brought into the living rooms of most of America.
6. Broad City premiered
Broad City, a show about two young women living in New York City who just so happen to love getting high, premiered on Comedy Central. This was one of the first times a female “stoner stereotype” was featured on a TV show. We would like to personally thank creators Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer for Broad City, as anything with hot stoned girls is near and dear to our hearts.
5. Naked Weed Report launched
That’s right! Our friends over at Naked Weed Report launched their first episode on December 6, 2014. If you haven’t had a chance yet, check them out. They are a web-based news program dedicated to marijuana. Oh, and they get naked. You can see why we’re in love.
4. Vape is the Word of the Year
The Oxford Dictionaries named “vape” to be the 2014 Word of the Year. The definition of “vape” is: “to inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.” Similar device? I see what you did there, Oxford Dictionaries. And, if anyone is curious, a runner up to “vape” was “budtender.” Thanks to the Oxford Dictionaries, marijuana lingo is official.
3. Oregon, Alaska, and DC legalized weed
Two more states AND our nation’s capital legalized recreational marijuana! This is a huge win for the legalization campaign, as well as the acceptance of cannabis culture around our country.
2. The first legal sale of weed took place
Just mere hours into 2014, the first legal weed sales occurred in Colorado. For the first time in our country’s recent history, weed could legally be bought and sold recreationally. Talk about milestone!
1. Stoned Girls launched
Like we weren’t going to include ourselves on this list. Come on now!
It’s been one hell of a year for cannabis connoisseurs! I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I am very excited for 2015. Be on the lookout in the next few days for our Stoned Girls predictions for this upcoming year!
